Why Isn't My Roofing Company Showing Up on Google?

By
, 7 minute read

You search for “roofer near me” from your own driveway and your company is nowhere to be seen. It's one of the most common frustrations we hear from roofers, and the cause is usually one of a handful of fixable problems. Here's how to check each one yourself.

First, check whether Google knows your site exists

Type site:yourdomain.com into Google, using your real domain. If no results appear, Google hasn't indexed your website at all. Common causes are a brand-new domain, a setting that tells search engines not to index the site (common on sites left in “draft” mode), or a site that has never been submitted to Google Search Console.

Fix: set up Google Search Console, submit your sitemap and check the Pages report for errors.

Your Google Business Profile isn't set up properly

For local searches, most homeowners never scroll past the map results. If your Google Business Profile is missing, unverified or incomplete, you won't appear there, however good your website is.

  • Is your profile verified?
  • Is your primary category “Roofing contractor”?
  • Have you listed every service and every town you serve?
  • Do your name, address and website match your website exactly?

Our guide to Google Business Profile for roofers covers what we set up first.

You have one “Services” page for everything

Google ranks individual pages. If roof replacement, repair, storm damage and gutters all share one page, none of them is likely to rank well. Each service you want calls for deserves its own page, with real detail about how you do that job.

You're not showing Google where you work

If your website only mentions your home town, Google has little reason to show you in the next town over. A page for each area you serve, with genuinely local detail, gives Google a reason to rank you there. Copying the same page and swapping the town name doesn't work; Google treats near-identical pages as low quality.

Your competitors have more reviews

Reviews strongly influence both the map rankings and which roofer a homeowner calls. If the roofers above you have 80 reviews and you have 9, that gap matters. The fix is a simple, consistent habit of asking every happy customer for a review right after the job.

Your website is slow or hard to use on a phone

Most people searching for a roofer are on a phone. Run your site through Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool. If your mobile score is poor, or the quote form is hard to find on a phone, you're losing both rankings and leads.

Your business details don't match across the web

Old addresses, different business names or outdated phone numbers on directories like Yelp, Angi and the Better Business Bureau confuse Google about who you are. Search for your company name and fix any listing that doesn't match.

What to fix first

  1. Make sure Google has indexed your site (the site: search).
  2. Complete and verify your Google Business Profile.
  3. Start asking every customer for a review.
  4. Give each main service its own page.
  5. Add pages for the towns you want work in.
